i was first diagnosed with perthes when i was 3!For years before i was told i was a lazy child to be made to do it and then it was growing pains! I was always in constant pain and remember always being on my dad's shoulders! One day then i just callopsed, my leg just gave in. I had x-rays done and all that was left of my hip bone was a thin thread!
I was put into broomstick plaster (plaster on both legs and a bar between) I was in a wheelchair like this for 6 and half years! When i came out i had physiotherapy and went in swimming every week, but i was still in pain!I had MRI's CT scans, had camera etc but doctor couldn't work out why i was having the pain! They told my dad i was making it up, i didn't want to go to school it was all attention seeking! My dad was furious he had watch me struggle to walk and they had wake up to me screaming in pain at night!!!
Well that was it for me the doctor said it was all in my head then it was all in my head! I got on with my life i trained to be a nursery nurse and worked 50hrs a week to buy a new car. I still had alot of pain but i lived with it never complained or moaned and just got on!
2 years ago pain got bit to much and i went to GP for painkillers when he examined me i had no movement in my left hip,so he transfered me to consultant!
I went and he said i just had to live with it i was to young for any surgery, that wasn't a option for at least another 10yrs!
So once again went away and got on. Went out for the weekend and on Sunday evening i got out of the chair bent down and my hip 'locked' i couldn't move a was screamin in agony, couldn't sit down walk anything. i got rushed to local hospital had more x-rays and doctor told me it was a miracle i was walking with that hip!Got back in touch with consultant had MRI scans and Ct scans and was told what he had hoped would start happening in 10yrs time has already started happening! The hip had got that bad i needed a total left hip replacement!!!
I haven't been in work since end of nov, i had to use a crutch to get around! Its been 11 days now since i've had my hip replacement and its been the best thing ever! Its been emotionally and physically draining, but already its made a difference!! I dont have that horrible aching nagging pain deep in my bones its just surgical and muscle pain! which is nothing compared to pain before!!!I;ve so much more movement already, movement i've never had! I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel!!!
