I am the mother of Denver, who was diagnosed at 5 yrs of age. He was riding a horse, and slid off the side. He experienced pain in his groin, and we assumed he had pulled a muscle. Luckily, we had him x-rayed, and the x-ray tech noticed an abnormal hip. Perthes. We had to keep this busy boy calm, and that was not easy. We puchased a heavy duty stroller, and used wagons to move him around. Denver is now 13 yrs old. As far as Perthes goes, Denver has a bad case of it. He has had the brace (for 2 days), casts on both legs twice (we had to turn him sideways to go through doors), and then the shelf surgery, (to add a piece of bone to the cup of the hip). We live on a farm, and horses have always been a part of Denver's life. He is now a calf roper, and rides his horse weekly, despite the pain he sometimes experiences! Tough Kid!!! Looking back, we probably should have had the surgery sooner, as the casts were far more painful, and disruptive to Denver's life, than the surgery. We recently visited the Doctor, and she is contemplating another surgery to resurface (smooth) the femeral head. The doctor thinks that Denver may be able to achieve a few more inches to the spead of his legs. Has anyone had this resurfacing surgery? What was the recovery time? Was it worth it? We would love to hear from you.
