Hi, Great site,
Our son Sam who is now 5yrs old as of June this year, was diagnosed with grade4 full head involvement perthes in Nov 07.
The build up to the diagnosis was a significant but intermittent limp he had developed a few weeks prior to being diagnosed. Sam was a very active kid previous to this with a great fun-loving and mischievous personality. Sam's activity is now severely restricted and uses a wheelchair for the most part of his day, but he remains a happy,fun- loving and mischievous kid and for the most part accepts his situation with great amount of Independence and courage.
Sams treatment to date has consisted the use of a wheelchair to limit weight bearing we go swimming at least four times a week, he has phyiso once a week we do various exercises at home daily and give him lots of warm baths he sleeps with a wheat bag on his hip at night and he even has reflexology once every couple of weeks (it seems to help)
Sam has had good range of movement so far, but over the last week or so he has been getting more pain and seems to be stiffening up a bit, I fear if this does not ease up soon we may have to face more radical treatment options, but we remain positive.
I hope this pain maybe due to Sam coming out of the fragmentation phase, he is due new xrays next month so we will know more then. I will post an update. In the meantime if anyone has any suggestions as to what else we may do to help him along this process or would like to know anymore of our story please ask.
Good luck to all.
Samsdad.
