Hi, I am Kim from Whangarei NZ. Our son Jordan is 12 and also has Down syndrome. He has had Perthes disease since about 4 years old but only diagnosed at about 6 years old by accident from an abdominal xray. The approch was to wait and see. He now has a grossly mis shapen head of femur (mushroom shaped) and shorted left leg due to the head pulling the femur out to the side. Jordan walks with a limp (didn't used to) and when resting has one foot flat on the floor and the other foot is on tippy toes.
He has to have an osteotomy with 6 weeks in a wheel chai or possibly on crutches. The surgeon from starship said that if we didn't be careful and that the operation didn't work - that he would then have to have a rod and screw inserted. He indicated that if it wasn't successful (apart from infection) that basically it would be because of us.....eeek! That's scary.
Any has anyone else's child had this....what was the outcome and how long before the child can swim or do you have to keep the hip totally immobile for 6 weeks?
Thanks
Kim
