My grandson Austin was diagnosed with Perthes at the age of 4 and has had it for about a year now. He had surgery on Jan 7, 2010. He had his femur bone cut and the metal bracket attached to it and his hip, with his leg bone moved up in the socket. He is currently at the stage of the ball dying and some flaking. He did stay off his leg for 6 weeks after surgery, and is trying to walk now. He still needs his walker to aid him in walking. He does have a prominent limp, and occasional pain. We were thankful that the Shriners in Shreveport were able to help him. We are still at the unknown stage, as to how all of this will work out for him. We still have a lot of questions and not sure where to turn. We hear a lot of different stories, some much different than others. One thing I have noticed it has changed him, and the person he was growing to be. Not just physically, but also emotionally as well. We as a family are all dealing with this. And we are thankful that this is not a life threating disease, and thankful to have him.

Has anyone else had the problem of walking with out aid after surgery? Doctors said Austin should start walking with out help by now. But he seems to still need his walker for support. We feel that we need to let him use it until he is ready to walk without the aid of it. He either is afraid to walk alone or it still hurts. He is five, so we are not getting much of a reason, except it hurts. He does have a limp. He can go pretty fast with the walker. What are other experience with this issue. Thanks in advance for your answers.

Things were going pretty good for Austin. Other than the fact his right leg is about 1" shorter than his good one, we were managing. Received good results 6 months after surgery, the leg is postioned in the proper place in his hip, still going thru the stage of the ball dying off. Then the day after his visit with shriners, he turned to his right to get away form a child at the babysitters, tripped and fell. He broke his femor between the plate and his knee. His is now on bedrest for the next 6 weeks. His mommy quit her job that she just started, and is staying home with him. They are considering home schooling him for the next year at least. The fear that this may happen again at school. We still fell blessed, as this could all still be worse, and there is always someone else who has it worse. This disease is life altering, but not life threating.
