HI ;D My names David and I have perthes disease. I'm 16 now and starting my A-levels soon, but I have a problem with my future career. I was diagnosed with perthes when I was young maybe around 6 but not sure and I dont remember going through much pain with it. I have it in my right hip only and it doesn't stop me from doing a great deal. I now and again get a short pain that lasts no longer than 2 seconds if I twist my leg in a awkward position and I might need a hip replacement in my mid-40's.
Since being very young I have always wanted to join the police force but have serious doubts about it due to my hip. I can run, jump and tackle ect and my consultant said he has no problems with me joining the force but I was wondering what your opinions are and whether you could help me. Thanks David

Hi David
Give it a go! If your consultant feels that you are physically able to do this, it would be a shame not to try. Last thing you want is 20 years from now, is to have regrets about not taking this opportunity.
Depending on how bad your perthes was, generally they recommend not taking on jobs like farming, playing contact sports and ballet, but that really depends on how bad the perthes was and how well you have healed. Many people who had perthes as a child have gone on to join the armed forces, run marathons and many other highly physical jobs.
All the best and I hope you fly through the training!
Donna
